Based on empirical analysis of the Household Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia Survey (HILDA) and the Department of Family and Community Services’ Longitudinal Administrative Data Set (LDS), this paper shows how couple parents share parenting, job-search and paid employment responsibilities when in receipt of income support. The LDS is used to investigate whether sustained exits from income support are more likely to be associated with certain patterns of sharing parenting and employment responsibilities. The HILDA is used to show how factors such as education and attitudes to traditional gender roles in parenting and paid work impact on these patterns.
