Community services professionals are facing major challenges with insecure employment in workplaces that demand specified outcomes and clients who know their rights and demand to make decisions. Do social workers, who are trained for three, four or more years to assess a multitude of factors from structural inequality to personal emotions, have anything to offer the range of competing interests who want quick solutions on a shoe string budget? With professional preciousness a thing of the past, social workers and other professionals will only survive if they are judged to deliver value for money in a strained environment. Have they got what it takes, and can they run fast enough to meet these expectations?
