This paper presents estimates of spatial income inequality and poverty in Australia and tests the hypothesis of increasing spatial inequality in Australia over the 1990s. The analysis uses Census-based spatial income data at the Collection District (CD), Statistical Local Area (SLA), and Local Government Area (LGA) levels using person, family and household income estimates. To accommodate the grouped nature of the Census income data we use the beta distribution, which has been found to perform well in capturing the distribution of income, to derive estimates of the Gini coefficient and Foster poverty measures. The results indicate significant change in the distribution but the direction of the change is not uniform across Australia.
