Recent research on the aspirations and expectations of high school students in Australia has revealed the significance of family background. Family background has a significant bearing on the differing destinations students target in their post-school plans. It also influences the extent to which post-school plans are implemented, an influence more marked when those plans involve university attendance. This paper considers policy and practice implications arising from this research, with particular attention to issues of equity and education.
