This paper will present findings of preliminary research investigating the factors involved in the relationship between transport and well-being and how these factors are experienced by population subgroups in 3 different locations in Western Sydney. The conceptual framework for the research draws on definitions of accessibility from social, urban and transport policy and international studies and explores accessibility as a composite of four dimensions: people, place, activity and transport.Using spatial analysis of census data the research investigated the distribution of ‘transport disadvantaged’ locations across the Sydney metropolitan area and the size and composition of the population who live in these locations. Focus groups are to be conducted with specific subgroups in three of these locations in May to gain a better understanding of their travel needs and experiences and transport concerns. The research is due for completion in June 2005. The research aims to contribute to a more holistic understanding accessibility and its relationship to individual and community well-being.
