So what does constitute a strong community? This paper brings together data concerning what constitutes 'strong communities' and provides a framework for evaluating whether interventions move us closer or further away from that goal. Within academic literature concerning the spatial dimensions of sustainable and resilient communities the current discourse is of community capacity, community development and healthy, sustainable communities. In our community development work in the context of urban renewal initiatives some surprising data is emerging. This data is contrasted with a review of other empirical work which reports the views of people on what makes their communities desirable and sustainable. A typology has been developed in which the key approaches are critically reviewed. Paper
